CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH STUDY
Propaganda Detection Study
We are asking you to choose whether or not to volunteer for a research study about the way
people attend to different types of messages. This page is to give you key information to help
you decide whether to participate.
What is the study about?
The purpose of this study is to measure and improve your ability to recognize common
propaganda techniques in authentic speech.
Where is the study going to take place and how long will it last?
The research procedure is being conducted entirely online through Cloud Research Connect
data collection platform. The total amount of time you will be asked to volunteer for this
study is no more than 60 minutes to take place in a single session.
What will you be asked to do?
In the session, you will be first asked to provide participation consent. If you do, for
the purpose of the study, you will be placed in one of three different participation groups. If
you choose to participate, you will be one of approximately 750 participants who have agreed
to participate in baseline assessment, training activity, and a final assessment regarding
skills to detect propaganda usage.
Will your information be used for future research?
No identifiable information will be collected in this study. The information we collect
may be used for future research or shared with other researchers without additional informed
consent. More specifically, the data may be used to compare the results from this study with
those from future results.
What are the key reasons you might choose to volunteer for this study?
The main benefit of participating is knowing that you will be helping researchers learn how
to better design effective approaches to combat the usage of propaganda techniques in media and
everyday use.
Will you receive compensation?
Upon completion of the study, as our token of gratitude for your participation, you will
receive a small payment in the amount of $10 administered by Cloud Research Connect.
What are the key reasons you might choose NOT to volunteer for this study?
If you are younger than 18 years of age, you will not qualify for this study. Furthermore, to
the best of the researchers' knowledge, the things you will be doing have no more risk of
harm than you would experience in everyday life. Additionally, there are no costs associated with
taking part in the study.
Do you have to take part in this study?
If you decide to take part in the study, it should be because you really want to volunteer.
You will not lose any services, benefits, or rights you would normally have if you choose not
to volunteer.
If you do not want to take part in the study, are there other choices?
If you do not wish to participate in the research study, there are no other opportunities
to participate in this study.
Who will see the information that you give?
The researchers associated with this study will have access to your information for the duration
of the study. As earlier suggested, no identifying information will be associated with
your participation. In addition, your responses will be combined with information from other
people taking part in the study. The researchers may publish the results of this study; however,
they will write about the combined information gathered.
Please be aware, while we make every effort to safeguard your data once received from the
online survey/data gathering company, given the nature of online surveys, as with anything
involving the internet, we can never guarantee the confidentiality of the data while still on
the survey/data gathering company's servers, or while en route to either them or us. It is also
possible that raw data collected for research purposes may be used for marketing or reporting
purposes by the survey/data gathering company after the research is concluded, depending on
the company's Terms of Service and Privacy policies. We will keep confidential all research
records to the extent allowed by law.
Can you choose to withdraw from the study early?
You can choose to leave the study at any time, however compensation is provided only for
completion. You will not be treated differently if you decide to stop taking part in the study.
If you choose to leave the study early, data collected until that point will remain in the
study database and may not be removed. In addition, the investigators conducting the study
may need to remove you from the study. This may occur if you are unable to follow the directions
provided.
